Phillips was born on February 24, 1891 to Peder and Lena Phillips on the family homestead near Valley Springs, SD. There he attended school and grew to manhood. He married Emma Stensland on Dec. 18, 1915 at Garretson. They first farmed near Valley Springs before moving to their farm southeast of Garretson where they farmed until 1961, when they retired and moved into town. Emma passed away on July 19, 1968. He married Emma Stensland on Dec. 18, 1915 at Garretson. They first farmed near Valley Springs before moving to their farm southeast of Garretson where they farmed until 1961, when they retired and moved into town. Emma passed away on July 19, 1968. Nead enjoyed fishing and also growing beautiful flowers until entering the Palisade Manor in August of 1971. He was up and around until suffering a fall which resulted in hip surgery. He then returned to the home to recuperate, and there he later passed away. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and had served as Chairman of the School Board District #136. Nead, his wife and family had been very active in 4-H work. Nead is lovingly remembered by one daughter, Loraine Edmundson (Milton) of Garretson; eight grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren; his daughter-in-law, Edna Phillips of Estelline, SD; three brothers, Peder of Valley Springs, George of Gustine, CA, and Ruben of Luverne, MN; a sister, Ferne Witt of Luverne; a sister-in-law, nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his wife, a son, Vernus, a son-in-law, his parents, two brothers and three sisters. Services 10:30 AM Saturday, August 19, 1978 Zion Lutheran Church, Garretson, SD Rev.
