Pall bearers were Carl Johnson of Sherman, SD, Ernest Johnson, Hardwick, MN, Carl Tweidt, Booge, SD, Henry Nierson, Sioux Falls, SD, Walter Johnson, Pipeston, MN, and G. E. Shafer, Valley Springs. Mr. Phillips was born near Oslo in Jevnaker, Oppland, Norway, December 11, 1847. His parents were Lars Larsen Bjoralteie and Berthe Pedersdatter. They lived at Fillipsbraten of Bjoralt vestre in the censuses of 1875 and 1891. Peder Larsen emigrated to America on the ship "New Brunswick" at the age of 21. Peder later changed his surname to Phillips. The New Brunswick was built in 1864 at Kiswick, Pugwash, Nova Scotia in Canada. She had a tonnage of 499 gross ton, 480 net. Dimensions were: length 128 feet x beam 28,5 feet and dept 16,6 feet. She was owned by N. W. Cock of Brevik. This ship made a number of voyages with emigrants from Norway. In 1868, she departed from Christiania May 25th, and arrived at Quebec Aug. 17th carrying 286 passengers. After 3 weeks at sea the ship had passed off Ireland and was hit by very strong contrary winds which forced her back past Scotland and into the North Sea. The pumps started to fail, and the Captain took the ship in to port at Haugesund. There was no damage to the ship itself, and soon proceeded on her way again. Mr. Phillips went first to Whitewater, Wisconsin. In 1873 he filed on a homestead south of Valley Springs, SD where he lived with his family for 54 years. He was married at Bruce, MN, February 24, 1885, to Miss Lena Sjurson. All the hardships of pioneer life were experienced by the Phillips family. Ten children were born to this union: Louie and Iva of Sioux Falls, Ben, Hilda, Ruben and Ferne of Beaver Creek, MN, Nead of Garretson, and Peder and George of Valley Springs. These and his wife survive him. One daughter, Florence, died at Freeport, IL, August 31, 1930. There are two grandchildren, Vernus and Loraine, children of Mr. and Mrs. Nead Phillips. Mr. Phillips, in moving from the old farm home in the spring of 1928, apparently affected his health, as after that he failed rapidly, first losing his sight and later suffering a physical breakdown.
