A memorial has been established to First Lutheran Church of Newell. Neil A. Martin was born to Frank and Ruth (Wilson) Martin, June 2, 1928, at Newell. He grew up in Newell and attended school and was graduated from Newell High School. He attended South Dakota S U at Brookings and participated in course at the American Institute of Banking. He served in the Army during World War II and Nov. 28, 1949, he was married to Grace Gehringer at Belle Fourche. Martin was the Newell city auditor for 12 years and worked for the Valley Irrigator prior to starting work at First National Bank of the Black Hills in June 1961. In 1974 he was made Vice President and Manager of the bank and retired Jan. 31, 1984. Martin was a past member of the Jaycees, Volunteer Fire Department, Newell Community Club, Newell Golf Club, and had served on the school board. Survivors include his wife Grace of Newell; one son Greg of Springfield, Va.; two daughters, Cindy Mahoney of Fort Belvoir, VA and Shelly Campbell of Newell; his mother, Ruth Martin of Newell; four sisters, Joyce Smith of California; Lorraine Schmidt and Lois Swanson, both of Belle Fourche, Esther Nedella of Bullhead City, Ariz., and six grandchildren. The open house will be at the Norwest Bank, Newell office. Martin was elected vice president and manager of the bank in 1974, and maintained this position for the past ten years. His retirement is effective January 31, 1984. Neil's plans for the immediate future are indefinite, but plans to do some fishing, golfing and just relax for awhile, if that is possible.
