The church nave was well filled with friends of the Middleton family. Dr. F.T. Mayer Oakes, pastor, officiated, and the honorary pallbearers were Dr F.X. Cretzmeyer, Dr. A.A. Theile, A.J. Hurt, Dwight G. McCarty, Harland Soper, and Henry H. Willingham. Active pallbearers were Jack Cook, Carl S Spies, Dr. John T. Ryan, Lon Heigen, Leo Jensvold, and Gilbert Knudson. Mrs. Jack Cook was orgianist and Mrs. William Kloster sang Open The Gates Of The Temple by Knapp. In charge of the many floral tributes were: Mrs. Carl G. Klingamap, Mrs Homer McAllister, and Mrs Harlan Boies. Furnnishing automobiles were: Joe A Hoyt, Byron Moad, and Burt Salvin. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery. While Mrs. Middleton had been in failing health several years, her death was unexpected and a shock to her many friends, many at them of long standing in Emmetsburg and elsewhere. She contracted influenza about ten day's ago and entered the hospital Friday evening when her condition, failed to improve. Her daughters Mrs J.B. Larson (Wanell) of Cleveland, OH and Mrs H.L. Reed (Virginia) of Hinsdale, Illinois were summoned, arriving over the weekend as her condition became critical. On Sunday her condition showed a slight improvemenet and Monday it became worse again, ending in death with her family around her. Besides her daughters she is survived by her husband, well known Emmetsburg man and retired lumber dealer; a son Herbert S Middleton of Emmetsburg; and 5 grandchildren: Martha and Eric Larson, Mark Middleton, David and Nancy Reed. Nelle Shadbolt was born Jan 8, 1882 in Emmetsburg, a daughter of the late Herbert and Viola Shadbolt, pioneer residents of Emmetsburg. She attended Emmetsburg schools and Comstock School of Oratory, which later became a division of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. She was married to Walter Gordon Middleton Aug. 14, 1907. For years she was active in club, community, and civic affair. She was a charter member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the P.E.O. and the American Association of University Women; a Past president of the Federated Womens club, and the Garden club, and a faithful member of the Congregational church, in which she was active in the womens fellowship. Before, during, and after World War II, she was production chairman for the Palo Alto county chapter of the Red Cross, a task at which she worked untiringly. She was declamatory instructor at Emmetsburg High school for a number of years and hundreds of former students received their training from her. Highly respected as a declamatory judge, she served in that capacity for many contests here and elsewhere. Mrs Middleton was interested in dramatics and skillfully directed High school and home talent casts in their productions. She was one of Emmetsburg's most hospitable, generous, well-like, and personable women. She bounded with good cheer and uncomplainingly devoted long hours of work to her activities. She was never known to have declined assistance to anyone, when called upon in time of need, and the thoughtful things she did for others through the years are without number. Her hospitality was widely known. She was a gracious hostess, friends were always welcome at her home and will long remember her culinary art. Fond of flowers, Mrs. Middleton spent many enjoyable hours before her illness in her rose garden at Oakwood. She had a way of growing things and was success with plants that failed for others. Her rose garden, one of the first on an extensive scale in Emmetsburg, was the inspiration for others who sought her advice planting their own. She gave instantly of her energy to any worthy project, she was called countess times. On more than one occasion, she worked to a point nearing exhaustion for the Red Cross feeling it was her patriotic duty. Always faithful to such tasks she was one who could be imposed upon because she did not have the heart to say no.
