Neely, 68, who was found burned to death in the back yard at the home of her son, Glenn, in Urbana Thursday evening as a result of a trash and grass fire, are tentatively scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 2:30. The children and relatives are expected to arrive tonight, it was explained, and will be here unless travel connections are missed. The services will be held in the United Brethren church at Urbana and will be in charge of the Rev. D. D. Larkins. Burial will be in the Urbana cemetery. [Obituary from the Chanute (KS) Tribune, June 8, 1946 (Saturday),pg. 3; provided by granddaughter Mary (Neely) Dunn, Contributor #48820866.] ----------------------------------- WOMAN ALONE DIES OF BURNS OUTSIDE HOME Mrs. Don Neely’s Body Is Found Several Hours After Her Death Flames from a grass fire claimed the life of Mrs. Don F. Neely, 68, in the back yard at the home of her son, Glenn, at Urbana yesterday. The barking of Glenn’s small dog attracted the attention of another son, George, who with Glenn was search the neighborhood for their mother, and the dog led him to the body about 8 o’clock last night. The tragedy, it is believed, occurred sometime between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. yesterday. Mrs. Neely was alone at home at the time. She evidently was burning trash in the rear of the home and the high wind caused the grass to catch fire. It was thought that Mrs. Neely fell while trying to extinguish the fire, catching her clothing afire. Glenn arrived home from work at Humboldt and didn’t see his mother but thought she was visiting of the neighbors. He went to Erie to visit a sister, Mrs. T. C. Hudson, and when he returned and found his mother still absent he went to the home of his brother, George, at Earleton to see if she had gone there. The brothers became alarmed, and started a search of the neighborhood for her. Mrs. Neely had just recently moved to her son’s home. Mrs. Neely was born May 27, in Elmwood, Ill. She came to Kansas when 19 years old. She was married Nov. 29, 1900, in Erie to Don F. Neely who died Nov. 24, 1944. She had lived in the Urbana vicinity for many years. She is survived by six sons, A.F. of Cherokee, N.C., James F. Bozeman, Mont., Robert H., San Diego, Califl, Don R., Salinas, Calif, George and Glenn; five daughters, Mrs. Lynn Bailey, Laredo, Tex., Mrs. Lloyd VanCleave of Galesburg, Mrs. Roland Showalter, Bellflower, Calif., Mrs. Frank Castle, Chanute, and Mrs. Hudson; 16 grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Hattie McCoy, Earleton, and four brothers, Calvin Haynes, Pekin, Ill., Harry, Peoria, Ill., Elery, Wellington, and John of Riverside, Calif. Funeral arrangements are not complete awaiting the arrival of the children. The body was taken to the Wilson mortuary at Thayer.
