She passed away peacefully at her home in Lamoni, Iowa, on Sunday, January 3, 2021, surrounded by family. Nellie grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, and attended Lincoln High School where she played clarinet in the band and was a baton twirler. She passed away peacefully at her home in Lamoni, Iowa, on Sunday, January 3, 2021, surrounded by family. Nellie grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, and attended Lincoln High School where she played clarinet in the band and was a baton twirler. She married Marden Lester “Pat” Blanchard on March 15, 1947, and made their home in Des Moines. Their marriage was blessed with five children: Rhonda, Michael, Sherry, Debby and Jimmy. She later married Ray Gene McBroom and they were blessed with an additional four children: Tracy, Troy, Tony and Lori. She became step-mom and lovingly helped raise Neta, Randy, Pam, Mike, Johnny and Kevin McBroom. In her younger years, she worked as an elevator operator at Hotel Savory. As a full-time mother and homemaker, Nellie did odd jobs to support her family: ironing at $1 a basket, carhop at Millie’s Drive-In and waitress at Johnny and Kay’s Steakhouse. After moving to Davis City, Iowa, Nellie and Ray purchased the Davis City Café, which they ran for five years. They then moved to Texas where she began as an in-home daycare provider that continued for 20 years, even after a move back to Iowa. Before retiring, she and Ray ran an antique store in Des Moines and did local flea markets. Nellie loved babies, yard sales, parades and going to the park for picnics. She made sure her children made it to Sunday school on a regular basis and loved getting her children new outfits for Easter. Her home church was New Hope Assembly of God in Urbandale, Iowa. She loved the Lord and shared that with everyone. God was a major focus in her life, and she instilled that in her children. Preceding her in death were her parents, James and Elsie Liddle; husband, Ray McBroom; sister, Mary Liddle; sons, Michael Blanchard and Tracy McBroom; step-sons, Johnny and Kevin McBroom; and granddaughter, Bethany Gruich. Survivors include sister, Alice Ross and husband, Bob of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; children and their spouses: Rhonda and Gary Walter of Des Moines, Iowa; Sherry and Allen Francesco of Hollister, Missouri; Debby and Harold Parson of Clinton, Illinois; Jimmy and Melissa Blanchard of Bonita Springs, Florida; Troy and Dawna McBroom, Tony and Jennifer McBroom, and Lori and Michael Gruich, of Lamoni, Iowa; step-children and their spouses: Neta Updegraff of Des Moines, Iowa; Randy McBroom of Des Moines, Iowa; Pam Kemp and Jess Soulis of Arvada, Colorado; Mike McBroom of Des Moines, Iowa; 22 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
