SABETHA HERALD (Sabetha, Kansas)- Wednesday, September 22, 2004- Page 5. NELLIE AVERY Nellie Firkins Avery, 92, of Sabetha died Sunday, September 19, 2004, at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha. She was born on a farm near Oneida on December 13, 1911, the daughter of Chester and Ollie Land Firkins. She attended Gage Rural School and Oneida schools. She graduated from Oneida high School 1930. She attended nurses training at St. Anthony's Hospital in Sabetha for a year and a half. She married Myron S. Avery on October 4, 1931. They lived and farmed north of Sabetha, and in 1938 moved to a farm south of Morrill. They worked together on the farm and received the Kansas Banker's Association award for soil conservation as well as the Brown County Conservation award in 1969. In June 1976, they sold their farm and moved to Sabetha. He died on November 12, 1976. On May 6, 981, Mrs. Avery entered the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabehta due to failing health. She was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church in Sabetha and the United Methodist Women's Fellowship. An infant daughter also preceded Mrs. Avery in death in 1937. Survivors include cousins and many friends. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 22, at the Sabetha Cemetery.
