Preceding his final illness Mr. Anderson enjoyed unusually good health for a man of his age. Nels Anderson was born in Norway April 25, 1849, and passed away July 9, 1927, and so had reached the advanced age of 78 years, 2 months and 14 days. He grew to young manhood in his native country and at the age of 25 he came to America, locating at Norman, Winnebago county, Iowa. He was united in marriage with Miss Martha Munson. May 28, 1874, and this union was blessed with thirteen children, nine of whom survive him. His wife passed away Aug. 30, 1918. The family lived at Norman for several years when they moved to Bradgate. Iowa. Mr. Anderson took up work with the Northwestern Railway Co. at Bradgate where he was employed as section foreman for nine months when he was transferred to Hawarden. In 1883 the family came to Hawarden and they made their home here for three months when they moved to the section house about three miles east of Alcester. Mr. Anderson helped lay the track between Hawarden and Alcester and then took charge of the section as foreman, which place he held until about eleven years ago when he was pensioned by the company. Sixteen years ago Mr. Anderson bought the S. W. Gamble residence property in the south part of town and the family moved to Hawarden and since that time he made his home here continuously. He was reared in the Lutheran faith and remained a firm believer in it until his death. Mr. Anderson was a faithful employee and honest and upright in all his dealings. He was of a kind and genial nature and will be missed by many outside the family circle. The children who survive him are Mrs. John E. Johnson of Alcester; Martin, Albert, Carl and Emil of Hawarden; Mrs. Nellie Penning of New Auburn, Wis.; John of Los Angeles, Calif.; Ingwald of Fort Wayne, Ind.; and Mrs. Myrtle Abbey of Winner, S. D. All of the children were present at the funeral with the exception of John. Funeral services were held on the lawn at his old home at 2:30 Monday afternoon with Rev. A. M. McIntosh of Sioux City, former pastor of the Presbyterian church of Hawarden, in charge. The choir of the Methodist church sang. His five sons who were present at the funeral and Robert Johnson of Alcester acted as pall bearers. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery. Out of town people besides his children who came to attend the funeral were Mons Forsmark, Mrs. Martha Olson, Mrs. Bertha Olson and Mrs. Mary Thompson of Flandreau, S. D. and Mrs. Penning and her son of Doon. A large number of his old friends and neighbors from Alcester also came to pay a tribute to the memory of a man whom they had learned to love and respect.
