Description	:	From 1992 Cloud County History Book. Nels Olson, son of Lars Olson and Christine Oldatter Olson. Lars and Christine were married in 1826 in Denmark. Lars died in 1834 leaving Christine with three small boys, Hans born in 1827, Ole born in 1829 and Nels born in 1833. Christine married Neils Hanson in 1835, he was a Swede and moved the family to Sweden. Nels returned to Denmark at the age of 19 and took a job as a coachman for a family in Copenhagen. Lars and Christine were married in 1826 in Denmark. Lars died in 1834 leaving Christine with three small boys, Hans born in 1827, Ole born in 1829 and Nels born in 1833. Christine married Neils Hanson in 1835, he was a Swede and moved the family to Sweden. Nels returned to Denmark at the age of 19 and took a job as a coachman for a family in Copenhagen. At about the same time 17-year-old Caroline Gertsen took a job as a maid for the same family in Copenhagen. Nels and Caroline were married June 11, 1860, in Denmark. They had three children before leaving Denmark - Hans Olson born in 1861, Mary Olson born in 1863 and Peter Olson born in 1866. On January 5, 1869, they left Copenhagen by ship for New York. They rode a train to the end of the railroad at Junction City, Kansas. They rode a freight wagon to Waterville, Kansas, and then walked 40 miles to their homestead near Clyde, Kansas. Three more children were born in Kansas: Christine in 1871, Frank in 1872 and Carrie in 1877. The family first lived in a dugout, then a log cabin and in 1875 built a six room Danish brick home. Concordia Blade-Empire 21 Aug 1902: Died Tuesday, August 19th at 2:00 a.m., Nels Olson at his old homestead. Mr. Olson was born in Denmark and came direct to Kansas from his native country and homesteaded the piece of land where he died in the spring of 1869. He was in his 70th year and was an energetic and successful farmer and kind husband and father. He leaves a wife, three daughters and two sons who have the sympathy of the whole community. The funeral was held at the M.E. Church on Wednesday, August 20, at 10:00 a.m. and he was buried in the Hollis Cemetery.
