Description	:	"Nelson and Fanny Chapman arrived in Jefferson County in March 1857. I found a copy of the Territorial Census of 1859. There was a census taken every year in the Kansas Territory from 1854 to 1861. So you see they were really early settlers. This territory which includes Lawrence was opened in 1854. The territorial capital was Lecompton which is about 15 miles south and a little west of Oskaloosa but on the other side of the Kansas River. Nelson Chapman was one the the first county commissioners of Jefferson County. In about 1859 the county decided to do away with their original board and go to a 3 commissioner government (which we still have in Douglas Co.) Nelson was one of the 3 elected to that first commission. During the Civil War he served as a teamster in the Kansas Miltia." "Independent" (Oskaloosa, KS), Saturday, October 26, 1872 "The funeral of Mr. Chapman was one of the largest ever held in this county, the procession being about a mile in length. He was buried by Masonic rites."
