She was born Oct. 2, 1921, the seventh of eight children of Bruce and Flossie (Thomas) Houlton of Ireton, Iowa. She was born Oct. 2, 1921, the seventh of eight children of Bruce and Flossie (Thomas) Houlton of Ireton, Iowa. Before her passing she reminisced about her childhood memories of farm life and the values instilled in her by her family experiences where the dominant theme was working together. Her father had the children running errands for him when they were very young. Her parents taught them to think ahead to the next job as one job was being finished. Instead of birthday parties on the farm, she remembered threshing and the World Series. That was the time of year when her dad and Will Brown collaborated to stack their grain and thresh. It was Will Brown's nephew who really caught her eye and she his. Trips into Ireton included the hope that Neva would see that nephew, Jim Brown. Whether it was after the church youth meetings or the Saturday shopping trips, she and Jim often found a way to be together. One of Neva's later techniques was to stroll by, only once, the window of the pool hall. Jim would soon put down his cue and meander outside to find Neva. In 1944 they married while Jim was on leave from the Navy. Until after WWII, their early, married life included short stays in cities dictated by the Navy, including San Francisco, New York City, Detroit and Chicago. When possible, Neva used her business administration certificate from Mankato Business College to supplement Jim's Navy pay. Upon Jim's discharge from the Navy, they moved to Ames, Iowa, until Jim graduated from Iowa State's Veterinary College. As with many young couples, the challenges of those early years of marriage magnified their sense of accomplishment and pride in what they were doing. Starting a family was one of those accomplishments and the temporary Quonset hut on campus was home for their young family. Their family became two girls and three boys (Janine - 1948, David - 1950, Susan - 1953, William - 1955 and Daniel - 1960). Through the AFS program they had a son from Thailand live with them for one school year, and he remains very close to the family. Jim's large animal veterinary practice took the growing family first to their hometown, Ireton, and then to Wayne, Neb., after a short swing back through Ames. Wayne is where Neva and Jim's children really developed. The Wayne Methodist Church played a prominent role in their lives. Neva directed children choir, taught vacation bible and Sunday school and with Jim participated in a very active and meaningful adult fellowship group. Many life-long friendships were started in Wayne. The idyllic life in Wayne was disrupted when Janine was killed in an auto accident one month before her wedding date. Within a year, the veterinary practice was sold and the family moved to Barron. They could not have asked for a better place to try to repair their hurt. Church was again the center of Neva's and the family's lives. They were warmly welcomed into the first United Methodist Church of Barron and further expanded the list of life-long friends. Neva again taught Sunday school, sang in the adult choir, participated in United Methodist women circles and served in various leadership positions. Evangelism and membership was a favorite, especially visits with members. Many friendships were established. The Barron years were also her years of being Grandma Neva. Officially she has nine grandchildren: Sarah and Codias; George and Jean; Eric, Ella and Adrienne; and Mei Li and William. However, many in her community called her Grandma Neva. Helping young people realize their potential and feel love was a mission she relished. These community relationships became especially important when her beloved Jim died in 1993 after 13 years of her nursing him while his heart failed. Neva learned her life lessons very well, was loved by many and will remain in people's hearts. We will miss you Neva. Visitation was held 6-8 p.m. Sunday from Rausch-Rockman Funeral Chapel, Barron, and an hour prior to services at the church Monday. Services were also held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 4, from Ireton United Methodist Church, Rev. Tim Walker officiating, with burial at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Ireton.
