Read More	Mr. Nicholas Henkels Goes To His Reward Highly Esteemed And Well Known Dyersville Citizen Died Monday Evening Death Resulted From a Paralytic Stroke Which He Suffered Two Weeks Ago Death claimed one of Dyersville's most highly respected citizens, Mr. Nicholas Henkels, who passed away Monday evening, March 15, 1915 at 9:30 o'clock, at the family residence in this city. Mr. Henkels suffered a stroke of paralysis on Sunday morning, February 28, from which time he was apparently in an unconscious condition, his life slowly ebbing, as his strength grew weaker, until he sank peacefully away into eternal sleep, death coming as a relief after a vain effort to restore him to consciousness and to prolong his life. Deceased was born at Luxembourg, Dubuque County, on March 4, 1855, and was 60 years old at the time of his death. His early life was spent here, where he was educated. On March 12, 1879 he was married to Miss Magdalena Lichter, in Holy Trinity Church, Luxembourg, and they went to housekeeping on a farm south of that place, where they remained until November of the year 1894, where they purchased the Pennsylvania hotel in this city, moving here and meeting with success in the business venture. Some years later had an attack of typhoid which left him in a weekend condition, but naturally of a robust constitution he delivered from this serious illness returned to active business life. He continued in the hotel business eleven years, when he disposed of it and went back to farming, having purchased a tract of land south of town. Here the family resided until December of 1913, when they moved into their modern new residence, just then completed and located in the south part of town. Eleven children blessed their union, nine of whom with his wife survive. They are Margaret; Mrs. Andrew G. Ernster; Mary, Mrs. Nicholas J. Ernster; Katherine, Mrs. Frank Faha, Jr.; Anna, Mrs. Chas. Goerdt; Dora, Mrs. A. J. Drexler; Peter, Nicholas A., Theresia, Floyd, all of whom reside in Dyersville. Two children died in infancy. The career of Mr. Henkels is one marked with noble deeds and lofty purposes. He enjoyed the warm friendship of all who knew him and and went through life, kind, obliging and cheerful, respected by both young and old. He entered heartily into movements, which meant betterment of conditions and gave cheerfully his assistance towards their accomplishments. In his death Dyersville loses one of its best and most loyal citizens, whose passing occasional expressions of heartfelt regret, from his countless friends. Always kind and considerate to his wife and children, there sprung strong ties of love and esteem and in his last illness, members of his family were in constant attention at his bedside, with hopes for his recovery, following him to the banks of the great divide. To the family heartfelt sympathy is extended. The funeral took place Thursday morning from the family home to St. Francis Church, where requiem mass, was celebrated by Rev. Father Dunkel, after which interment was made in St. Francis Cemetery. The members of St. Joseph's Court, No. 500, C.O.F., of which he was a charter member, attended in a body. The pallbearers were Leonard Digman, Oris Klein, Henry Berger, J. W. Westermeyer, J. H. Manley, J. H. Denkhoff, all charter members of St. Joseph Court, No. 500, Catholic Order of Forester.
