Henkels Sunday Death claimed, Mrs. Magdalena Henkels, wife of the late Mr. Nicholas Henkels, Sr., at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Henkels, 119 Willow Street, Sunday evening January 7, 1940, at 10:45 o'clock. Death followed an illness of several weeks duration. Mrs. Henkels, when she fell in the home, sustaining a fracture limb. She was removed to the hospital in Dubuque where the injured member was placed in a cast. She recovered from her injury and was removed to the home of her son, P. J. Henkels of this city about three weeks ago, where she was tenderly cared for by all her children until death claimed her. She did not regain her former strength and death claimed her at the time stated above. She was born January 16, 1859, as Miss Magdalena Lichter, and would have been 82 years old, next Monday. She received her education in the rural and parochial school and grew to young womanhood in this vicinity. On March 12, 1879 she was married to Mr. Nicholas Henkels in Holy Trinity Church at Luxembourg and they established their home on a farm south of that place and resided there until in November 1894. They then purchased the Pennsylvania Hotel in this city and managed the same for a period of eleven years, when they disposed of it and purchased a farm south of this city, where they resided until Dec. 1913 when they again moved to Dyersville. Mr. Henkels preceded her in death, two in infancy and Nicholas Jr., who died in the year 1920. Eleven children were born to them and those surviving their mother are: Margaret, Mrs. A. G. Ernster; Mary, Mrs. N. Ernster; Mrs. Cathrine Faha; Anna, Mrs. Charles Goerdt; Peter J. Henkels; Dora, Mrs. Albert Drexler, Floyd Henkels all of this city; and Thersa Henkels of Waterloo. She is also survived by one brother, Michael Lichter, of Wautauga, S. D., one sister, Mrs. Peter Errthum, Holy Cross; 22 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. The funeral took place Wednesday morning from Steger-Hoffman Funeral Home at 9:30 o'clock to St. Francis Church, where requiem high mass was sung for the repose by Rev. Father Kurth, who also officiated at the graveside. The casket bears were Messrs J. H. Denkhoff, John Schuster, Henry Wessel, Hamilton Leigh, John Koelker and Wm. Lappefi. The priests present in the sanctuary were: Rev. Fathers Weihl, of Lamont; Louis Iekel, of New Hampton; Gerlemann of Berkley and Hovermann of Dyersville. Mrs. Henkels was a member of the Rosary Society and a staunch Catholic. When death claimed her she was well prepared to meet her Maker. She was a kind neighbor and friend and a devoted wife and mother. Heartfelt sympathy is extended to those left to mourn her lost. Dyersville Commercial, Jan. 7, 1940
