Read More	Obituary Monticello Express 14 January 1914 Death of Nicholas Miller Nicholas Miller died at the home of his son, Edward Miller, in Castle Grove, last Friday night about midnight, at the age of 86 years. Mr. Miller had been in fairly good health for a man of his years, up until the last week of his life. At that time he began to fail rapidly but was not taken seriously sick until Friday evening. He ate his supper as usual but soon afterwards became rapidly worse and died of heart trouble about midnight. He was born in 1827 at Loraine, France a province that has since become German territory. At the age of twenty he entered the French army and lived the severe life of a soldier for a term of seven years and six months. After the expiration of this enlistment he came to the United States at the age of twenty-seven, and after a period of prospecting, settled at Galena, Illinois in 1856, where he lived twelve or thirteen years. It was in that city that he married Katherine Even in 1857. Mr. and Mrs. Miller removed from Galena to Castle Grove about the year 1871. Mr. Miller and his wife moved to Monticello several years ago, and lived in retirement on Main street until the death of Mrs. Miller. Since her death Mr. Miller had made his home with his son, Edward, in Castle Grove. Mr. Miller was the father of nine children, Viz: Messrs Nicholas, Matt, George, Frank and Ed Miller, and Mrs. Susanna Kurt, Mrs. Katherine Turnis, Mrs. Margaret Kurt and Mrs. Elizabeth Gudenkauf. He was a devoted member of the Catholic church. He was an honest man and had the respect of all his neighbors and those who had the privilege of his acquaintanceship. Mr. Miller was thrifty and like a good father divided among his children after the death of his wife, the prosperity that he no longer needed. The funeral services were conducted at the Sacred Heart church in Monticello last Tuesday morning by the pastor who celebrated Mass and spoke words of eulogy of the dead and warnings to the living. There was a large attendance.
