Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 am Friday, November 23 at St. Martin Catholic Church in Emery. Burial with military honors will be in St. Martin Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 pm Thursday with a scripture service at 7:00 pm at St. Martin Catholic Church. Arrangements are with the Hettinger-Bittner Funeral Chapel in Emery. Nicholas George Schleich was born on a farm southeast of Alexandria, on December 6th, 1929. His parents were William C. Schleich and Mary C. (Kayser). The family moved to a farm west of Emery when Nicholas was six. He attended and graduated from St. Martin's grade school. He then helped his father and also became a farmer after the family moved to a farm northwest of Emery. When Nicholas was 21, he enlisted in the Air Force and served for four years, one of which was served in Korea. After returning to the United States, he was married to Alice Bartscher at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Farmer, SD on August 12, 1954. He was stationed at Cheyenne, Wyoming and discharged in October. Nick and Alice moved to the family farm. They were parents to 5 children. Nicholas retired from farming in 1988. They moved to Emery and after 21 years moved to Countryside living in Mitchell. He worked for Hanson County as Weed Supervisor for 19 years. They moved to Emery in 1997 after farming and being in the dairy business for 43 years. After retiring from his job as Weed Supervisor, Nick worked for Hanson County Rural Water. He was co-owner of the C&S Pest Control. Nicholas served as member of the Hanson County Water Board. He also was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, Korean War Veterans, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the 75th Air Depot Association and the DAV. He was especially active in Emery's American Legion Post and served as Commander and Adjutant many times and was elected Hanson County District Commander. He was a member of St. Martin's Catholic Church and served on the Church Council, served as Usher and was in St. Martin's choir. He was the Chairman in charge of St. Martin's Cemetery for a great number of years. He shared his humor and laughter with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren whom he deeply loved. He loved fishing, hunting and camping. He also enjoyed woodworking and made many mini airplanes and windmills which decorated his yard. Blessed to have shared his life is his wife Alice of 64 years; five children, Nancy (Robert) Banks of Fedora, Susan (Darrel) Huber of Sioux Falls, William (Lisa) Schleich of Emery, Robert (Lori) Schleich of Mitchell and David (Bonnie) Schleich of Emery, 27 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren, his sister LaVerne Nelson, sisters-in-law, Irene Olinger, Connie Bukacek, Georgie (Delbert) Weber, Maureen Weber, Teresa Bartscher, brother-in-law Bob (Leona) Bartscher. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Merrill Schleich, sisters Pauline Jensen and Helen Reuss, granddaughter Lily Schleich, great grandson Quincy Perry, brothers in law Donald Bartscher, Eugene Bartscher, Bill Olinger, Jerome Bukacek, Donald Weber, Elmer Jensen, Virgil Nelson and Marvin Reuss, sisters in law Maxine Schleich and Betty Bartscher.
