He located in Elgin township in the Seventies. Mr. Schlesser enjoyed a long life and vigorous health up to the time of his illness. He was a native of Luxembourg, Europe, where he was born June 15, 1844. He came to America when a youth and worked as a young man In Chicago and In the pineries of Michigan. He came to Le Mars in the seventies and bought a piece of raw land a mile east and a mile north of where Struble was later built and has lived on the place ever since. Mr. Schlesser often told how after buying the piece of land he went a second time to look at his purchase and became lost on the then expanse of bare prairie and how he placed stakes to find" the place again. He developed a fine farm and became a successful and prominent farmer and landowner. He loved the fields, the beasts, the birds and the expanse of country life and abhorred the idea of living in town or city. For the past eighteen years he made his home with his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas R. Schlesser and repeated frequently how satisfied he was to spend his declining days on the land he loved so well. Mr. Schlesser was widely known In Plymouth and Sioux counties, especially among the older settlers and enjoyed the respect and esteem of a large circle of friends and acquaintances. His wife preceded him in death thirty six years ago. The funeral services will be held at St. Joseph in Le Mars where his wife lies buried.
