Susan Schlesser was born to Nicholas Schlesser and Elise Elizabeth Nothem and raised on a farm in rural Struble, Elgin Township, Plymouth County, Iowa. She was one of ten children, six daughters and four sons. Susan's mother, Elise died suddenly when Susan was only 10 years old. She was raised by her father and older siblings. Susan Schlesser was born to Nicholas Schlesser and Elise Elizabeth Nothem and raised on a farm in rural Struble, Elgin Township, Plymouth County, Iowa. Susan was called to the vocation of a religious life and entered Mount St. Clare Convent on October 18, 1907. She was received as a novice and given the name Sister Mary Vincent on February 25, 1908. She made first vows on August 15, 1910, and perpetual vows of poverty, chastity and obedience for life as a Sister of St. Francis in Clinton, Iowa on August 15, 1918. She died at the Alverno in Clinton, Iowa, on February 11, 1979 at the age of 95. During her lifetime as a Sister of St. Francis, Sister Vincent enjoyed teaching school!
