May 25, 1932 - Carroll Daily Herald - Nick Backes, of 120 North Crawford street, died this morning at 1:45 at the age of 83. He had been ill since New Year's and on Jan. 29 underwent an operation in St. Anthony hospital. Death came peacefully in the early hours this morning. Nicolaus Backes was born Nov 7, 1848, in Luxemburg, and came to the United States, where he visited relatives in Chicago for some time. He then went to Mendota, Illinois, and worked on farms in that vicinity and also learned the carpenter trade. He was married to Miss Anna Meisel, Oct. 1, 1876, and came to Carroll county in 1884. They settled on a farm in Rosalie township where they lived for 28 years after which they came to Carroll and made their home. Three children were born to them, Mrs. Bertha Rose and John N. Backes both of Carroll, and Mrs. Anna Truhe of Glidden, all of whom survive. He also leaves his widow, seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Backes celebrated their golden wedding Oct. 1, 1926. Mr. Backes waa a charter member of St. Paul's Lutheran church and occupied a place of honor and esteem at the dedication in 1926. He was an elder for a number of years.
