August 19, 1938 - Carroll Daily Herald - Death claimed Mrs. Nick Backes, 81 years old, at their home 126 North Crawford street, at 6:20 Friday morning. Mrs. Backes had been ill of heart trouble and dropsy since the first part of May and had alternated between her bed and chair June. Friday morning she asked to be helped to her chair, where she had just been seated when she suddenly succumbed. In her passing Carroll loses one of its long time and well known residents, as she had lived in this county for more than half a century. The body will be removed Saturday afternoon from the Huffman Funeral Home to the family residence, where it will rest until the funeral services. Rites will be held Sunday afternoon with the Rev. A.O. Bleeke, pastor of the Lutheran Church officiating. A short service at the family home at 2 o'clock will be followed by final rites at St. Paul's Lutheran church at 2:30. Burial will be in the family lot in the Carroll Cemetery and pall bearers will be 6 grandsons of the deceased: Harry Rose, Walter Rose, and Howard Backes of Carroll, Warren Truhe and Lyle Markley of Glidden, and Curby Sims of Coon Rapids. Mrs. Backes was born Anna Meisel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Meisel, at Mendota, Illinois, May 3, 1857. Reared in the town of her birth, she there became the bride of Nick Backes on Oct. 1, 1876. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. J.G. Ade at the Lutheran Church. Mr. and Mrs. Backes established their home at Mendota, where they lived for 8 years while Mr Backes followed the carpenter trade. Then deciding to become Iowa farmers, they moved to Carroll County in 1884, purchasing a farm near Roselle, which they operated until their retirement in 1906. Since that time Mrs. Backes has lived in her home on Crawford Street. Mr. Backes died May 25, 1932. Mr. and Mrs. Backes celebrated their golden wedding, anniversary Oct. 1, 1926. Mrs. Backes was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church. She was a regular attendant at church services until this past June, when her illness forced her to remain at home. Another of her interests was the Ladies Aid Society of the church, in which she always took an active part. Surviving Mrs. Backes are two daughters and one son, Mrs. Bertha Rose, at home, Mrs. Anton Truhe of Glidden and John Backes of Carroll. She also leaves seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren; three sisters: Mrs. Albert Hoschiet, Brunswick, Neb., Mrs. Fred Hoschiet, Fairfax, S.D., and Mrs. Anton Hufford, Kearney, Neb.; and one brother, Ben Meisel, Manning, Iowa.
