He was born at Ahls, Denmark, November 15, 1855. He came to the United States in the 1870's, settling in Chicago, later moving to Kansas and from there to Custer County in 1881, where he has since made his home. He was married to Margaret Jinks, September 15, 1896, who preceded him in death May 17, 1925. He leaves to mourn his death, one daughter, Mrs. Lucy Blake of Brewster, Blaine County, and two grandchildren. Also one brother, Peter Peterson of New York and a number of other near relatives, including Mrs. Priscilla Caldwell, Mrs. H.S. Keller, Mrs. Chas. Lamb and Robert Jinks, step-children. Nikoli Peterson was well known to everyone in this community in which he spent so many years of his life as an honest, industrious man, and a first-class citizen who contributed largely to the up-building of the community and to the welfare and prosperity of its citizens. He was a kind-hearted man to whom nobody in distress ever appealed without securing relief and assistance. He was particularly interested in the young people, and was affectionately known by them as "Uncle Nick". Mr. Peterson was reared in the Lutheran faith and during all the years of his life he was an active Christian, with unbound faith in a future life. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Harry E. Wolcott, pastor of the Baptist Church, at the Danish Lutheran Church on the Basin, Monday, at 2:30 p.m. and interment in the church-yard cemetery."
