Read More	Nola Jean Collins died on March 6, 2009 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, South Dakota. She was 88 years old. Nola Jean Hotchkiss was born in Dallas, SD April 8, 1920. She was the eldest of two children born to Wayne and Fae Hotchkiss. She grew up in Dallas except for a short time when she and her parents lived in Bristow, NE. She graduated from Dallas High School in 1938. Jean enrolled at St. Marys School of Nursing in Pierre, graduating in 1941. After her graduation, she worked as a registered nurse with Dr. J.E. Studenberg in Burke and Gregory until enlisting in the US Army Nurse Corps in September 1943. Jean served as a nurse aboard the USS Hope, an Army hospital ship, throughout the Southwest Pacific, including the Philippines, New Guinea, and Japan. She was honorably discharged from the Army as a First Lieutenant in January 1946. Upon her return to South Dakota, she once again worked with Dr. Studenberg, this time in Winner. Jean married Thomas F. Collins in Winner on September 11, 1947. The couple had four children: Nancy, Tom, Beth and Mark During her career, she worked as an office nurse with Dr. Studenberg, as an RN at the Baptist Hospital of Winner, and as Tripp County Public Health Nurse. She also worked for the South Dakota Department of Health and for the Department of Social Services. She also worked as a nurse at the Rosebud Area Guidance Center (now Southern Plains Behavioral Health Services), retiring in February 1985. While working at the county nurse, Jean was instrumental in starting the community's first mental health clinics, with a consulting psychiatrist and psychologist visiting twice a month. When the clinics outgrew the county nurse's office, she and others in the community established the Rosebud Area Guidance Center. When Jean worked at the mental health center, she assisted the mentally ill with their transition to living outside of institutions and with their medication, independent living and financial arrangements. She directed the Center's partial care group and served as the Center's acting director. Jean was also instrumental in establishing Tripp County's first child protection team, the Winner Crisis Center, an Al-Anon group and a shelter for abused women. Jean was actively involved with the local chapter of the American Cancer Society, March of Dimes, Camp Fire Girls, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. She was a member of the USS Hope Association, the Winner Community Playhouse, the Tripp County Historical Society, and a life member of the South Dakota Historical Society. She was a life member of the American Legion and Legion Auxiliary and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and VFW Auxiliary. Jean was a faithful member of Trinity Episcopal Church for more than sixty years. At Trinity, she served as Sunday School superintendent for more than twenty years as well as being member of the vestry and the Episcopal Church Women. Her public service was recognized on several occasions. She received the Winner ESA chapter's Diana Award in 1980, was named Woman of the Year by the Winner Business and Professional Women and was a recipient of the Jefferson Award for Outstanding Public Service presented by Governor Mickelson in 1988. Jean enjoyed travelling, sewing, playing bridge, attending the annual military reunions with her Army and Navy hospital shipmates and spoiling her grandchildren. Grateful for having shared her life are her children Tom (Kirsten Thompson) of Portland Oregon, Beth (Tom) Iverson of Rapid City, and Mark of Omaha; her grandchildren, Nancy Iverson of Baltimore, Nicholas Iverson of Omaha, Steven Iverson of Brookings, Brendan Collins of Los Angeles, Kelly Collins of Portland and two step-grandchildren, Ilana James of Walla Walla, Washington and Tyler Miller of Portland. She is also survived by her in-laws Sybil Hotchkiss of Lake Andes, Kathleen Steele of Winner, Joan and Loren Foltz of Kansas City, MO, Carmen Perez Collins of Madrid, Spain, Jack and Helen Collins of West Des Moines, IA, and William Knodell of Rapid City, and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Tom, her daughter Nancy, her parents, and her brother, Donald Hotchkiss.
