Main St. Nora Maxine Arwood was born on July 27, 1920, at Willow Lake, SD to Vernon and Nora Antrim Arwood. This is the area where she grew up and attended school. On March 7, 1938, she married Edward Fiekens at Willow Lake, SD. They made their home on a farm near Willow Lake, SD until 1971 when they moved to Barnard, SD. They worked for the school until 1983 when they retired. She helped her daughter at the post office when needed over a period of several years. The work she treasured most of all was her service as a foster grandmother at the Barnard School. She loved each of the children very much, and greatly missed her work with them when she could no longer physically manage getting to and from the classroom. She had a heart for all children and when younger, had a dream to have an orphanage. Maxine was a loving wife and mother, a loyal friend, and a delight to know. Her sense of humor and quick wit were endearing to those who knew her. Her Christian faith carried her through challenging times. She will be greatly missed. Maxine was a member of First Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday School teacher and member of the Dorcas Circle and Ladies Aid. Grateful for having shared Maxine's life are her children, Betty (Doyne) Jensen, Frederick, Peggy (Charles) Cruse, Barnard, Nancy Mathisrud, Knoxville, TN, Mary (Harold) Forbes, Morgantown, WV, Leroy (Kara) Fiekens, Knoxville, TN, brother, Maynard Arwood, Point of Rock, WY, twelve grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters and four brothers.
