Services will be at 10:00am, Friday, December 13 at the Presho Gym with burial at Presho City Cemetery Norma Ann Hupp (or Turp as she was known to nearly everyone in her community) was born on September 24, 1938, to Winnie and June Hupp, joining siblings, Jean, Orange, Charlie (Little Guy), and Marjorie. The family was later joined by Forrest. Turp grew up in Presho, South Dakota, and attended Presho Schools, graduating from Presho High School in 1956. She attended Black Hills Teachers College in Spearfish and graduated in 1960 with degrees in Elementary Education and Physical Education and a minor in Social Studies. After earning her teaching certificate, Turp taught in Lyman Rural Schools and Presho Middle Schools and later in the Chamberlain School system. In addition to the classroom, she enjoyed coaching gymnastics and was elected to the South Dakota Gymnastics Coaches Hall of Fame in 1996. During her induction, she was noted as a pioneer in the sport of gymnastics. Before attending college, Turp did not know how to swim and was fearful of the water. She overcame that fear and became a proficient swimmer as part of her Physical Education degree, a skill that would ultimately touch the lives of thousands of children in the area. She served as a Red Cross Swimming Instructor, Life Saving Instructor, and Life Saving Instructor Trainer, retiring from "the pool" after nearly 50 swimming seasons. Upon her retirement, the pool at which she spent most of her time during the summer was renamed the Norma "Turp" Johnson Community Pool. Turp met her husband Cecil Johnson in 1956 while attending Black Hills Teachers College; they married in 1959. The couple welcomed E. Orange and Coreen. Turp was a member of the United Methodist Church and remained an active member until her death.
