Age 95 - April 29, 2021 "She was born near Grand River, IA to Iva Pearle West and Milton Everett West. She met and married Alfred Gray "Al" Nelson in 1948, and the couple raised three children in Omaha. She was first and foremost a mother and wife, but also was a valuable worker at First Central Congregational Church, and loved her 7 years at Bergan-Mercy Hospital as a unit secretary. Age 95 - April 29, 2021 "She was born near Grand River, IA to Iva Pearle West and Milton Everett West. She met and married Alfred Gray "Al" Nelson in 1948, and the couple raised three children in Omaha. She was first and foremost a mother and wife, but also was a valuable worker at First Central Congregational Church, and loved her 7 years at Bergan-Mercy Hospital as a unit secretary. "Norma was an exceptional seamstress, and she sewed primarily for her two girls and her granddaughters; fashion, costumes and doll clothes, all of which were works of art. She was a generous friend; eager to laugh, slow to criticize, and quick to forgive. "Norma was preceded in death by her parents; her infant brother, Dennis; and sisters, Vera and Venice; as well as nephew, Bernell. She is survived by her devoted husband of 72 years, Al; daughters, Jan Wilson (John), and Joy Lundeen (Dick); son, Eric Nelson (Teresa); her grandchildren, Aaron Lehmer (Heather), Eric Lundeen (Caroline), Jessi West Gunteski (Craig), and Ellen Ploucek (Chris); and her great-grandchildren, Graham, Freya and Harrison lit up her life. She particularly enjoyed being a surrogate mother to her friend, Karola Michalsky. "A Celebration of Life is planned for a later date at First Central Congregational Church in Omaha, Nebraska." * * * * * UPDATE by Bruce Garver on July 13, 2021: A Celebration of Norma Jean (West) Nelson's life took place at 11 a.m. CDT in First Central Congregational Church at 36th & Harney Streets in Omaha, Nebraska. In accordance with Norma Jean (West) Nelson's instructions, her body was donated to scientific research at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. Upon completion of such research by 2023, Norma's cremains will be placed in a niche at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Omaha, Nebraska. * * * * * On March 13, 2022, FAG member SRGF kindly attached to this Memorial a fine photograph of Norma Jean (West) Nelson's cast-metal niche plaque at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Omaha, seat of Douglas County, Nebraska. Norma's birth year of 1925 is cast into this plaque.
