Description	:	Norman Elwood "Grandpa" Hemby Norman Elwood Hemby, 85, of Pittsburg, died at 4:42 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center. He had been in failing health the last six months. He was born March 1, 1917, at Wappapello, Mo., to David Elwood and Mattie Evelina Thorne Hemby. Read More	Norman Elwood "Grandpa" Hemby Norman Elwood Hemby, 85, of Pittsburg, died at 4:42 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center. He had been in failing health the last six months. He was born March 1, 1917, at Wappapello, Mo., to David Elwood and Mattie Evelina Thorne Hemby. His early life was spent in southeast and southwest Missouri. Later, he moved with his family to Pittsburg. On Feb. 23, 1938, he married Margaret Ida Burch, at Lamar, Mo. She survives of Pittsburg. Mr. Hemby helped build Spencer Chemical Company and later the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant at Parsons. He worked in the coal pits for more then 15 years as a truck driver and heavy equipment operator. Later he worked for Wastell Clay Company. In 1971, he went to work for McNally Foundry. In 1972, he moved to northwest Kansas. He retired from Studly Co-op as a fuel supplier to farmers. In 1994, he moved back to Pittsburg. Membership was held in the Church of God Holiness and Baker Grange. Additional survivors include for sons, Curtiss E. Hemby, Sr., of Pittsburg, Bruce A. Hemby, of Aurora, Colo., and Steven D. Hemby and Stanley G. Hemby, both of Pittsburg; a daughter, Peggy D. Clark, of Rifle, Colo.; a sister, Lota Ruth Perry, of Pittsburg; 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a set of twins in infancy, five brothers and a sister. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, at Brenner Mortuary Chapel, where friends may call after 11 a.m. Friends also may call at the home of his son, Curtiss Hemby, at 1159 E. 126 Highway, Pittsburg. Arrangements are under the direction of Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. Fourth St.
