Group founder and accordion player Norrie Egger opened dances with "Dancing in the Dark" and closed with "I'll Be Seeing You." In between were such signature tunes as "Don't Worry About Me" and "I Hadn't Anyone 'Til You." Egger died of renal failure at the Nebraska Medical Center on Wednesday. He was 83. Memorial services were Sunday and Monday. In the 1960s, Egger's combo played six nights a week at Club 64 in Council Bluffs. In the 2000s, the combo often played at American Legion Post No. 1. "Everybody would say it sounded like a 10-piece band, and there were only five of them," said Egger's wife of 49 years, Carmie Egger of Omaha. In addition to Egger on accordion, the band had a vocalist, a bass player, a drummer and a woodwinds musician. Egger was born and raised in Columbus, Neb. "He started playing the accordion when he was five," his wife said. "He was self-taught, and he had a wonderful, wonderful career." In the 1950s, he played with the Muriel Lynn Trio, touring Omaha-area dance clubs. He also owned the Egger Music Store near 40th and L Streets, where he had more than 100 music students. He closed the store in 1960 to focus on the Norrie Egger Combo. The band played together until 20 months ago. Egger was able to keep playing into his 80s because he worked hard to stay fit. "For a musician to play an instrument that long is quite remarkable," Carmie Egger said. "His accordion weighed 40 pounds. He walked; he did floor exercises to keep playing. He retired a little earlier than he had planned, in August of 2006, because he got sick." Egger's survivors include daughters Noreen Thelen of Bennington and Shelly Fritton of Silver Creek, Neb.; sons Mike of Omaha, Kim of Silver Creek and Kevin of Columbus; brother Dean of Omaha; sisters Beverly Schafer of Columbus and Patricia Green of Albuquerque, N.M.; 14 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
