Read More	OBITUARY FROM STORM LAKE, IOWA, REGISTER: STORM LAKE, BUENA VISTA, IOWA: MARCH 18, 1947: NORVAL MASON LAYMAN: NEWELL--Norval Mason, son of George L. and Eloie Rench Layman was born Sept. 27, 1862, at Grantsville, Maryland, and on Sunday evening, March 9, 1947, at Alta, at 10 O'clock he passed away. Norval spent his childhood and youth in Maryland, mastering the primary and secondary schools as they were known in that day. The children of the home were baptized in infancy and Norval was received into the fellowship of the Methodist church at Frostburg at the age of 14. On March 29, 1885, Laura Belle Turner and he were united in marrage in the Methodist church at Frostburg. Norval was one of 13 children, three of whom survive, George of Newell, Mrs. Lee Stocker of Round-Up, Mont. and Harry C. of Chicago. The couple celebrated their golden wedding on March 29, 1935, in Newell. They came to Newell in 1887 and established themselves on a farm north of Newell. From that time their residence has been continuously in the Newell territory. They became members of the Methodist class then meeting in Coon township and upon moving into town they transferred to the First Methodist church. He engaged in several business enterprises, operating a livery four years, continued in the feed business for several years longer and then attached himself to the chariot of progress by operating a gas and oil station. He continued in business until his retirement in 1935. Norval had been for years an enthusiastic member of the I.O.O.F. and with his wife. They will be long remembered by the membership for their efficient leadership in the drill teams. He was also a member of the Farm Bureau. For many years he regularly served on the election board. He served with unswerving loyalty on the official board of the First Methodist church of Newell and was a trustee and steward for more than a score of years. His wife preceded him in death on April 10, 1937. Among the recent preparations for his dissolution was a gift (not a bequest) in the form of a $1,000 bond, to be handed to the Methodist church for the contemplated new building. Services were held Wednesday, March 12, from the Larson Funeral home and at the Methodist church. The pastor, Rev. Nelson F. Grote, was in charge, assisted by a former pastor, Rev. Karl W. G. Hiller, Rev F. Grote preached from the text, Job 5, 26, Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in his season. Music was rendered by a mixed quartet composed of Mrs. June Sameulson and Mrs. Ruth Grote, Frank Witter and Arnold Williams. Selections were "The Old Rugged Cross," "One Sweetly Solemn Thought" and "Rock of Ages," Mrs. Edna Witter was accompanist. Floral committee included Mrs. Bess Goetschiue and Mrs. Fern Larson. Bearers were Floyd Bellows, Loren Ellis, Louis Hansen, Emery Wilson, Ray Harris and Clarence Timke. Newell I.O.O.F. lodge attended in a body and formed an escort of honor, rendering funeral honors at the graveside.
