While in his youth, Mr. Layman moved westward into Illinois. On March 19, 1879 Mr. Layman moved to Newell, whose population at that time was 300, and resided on a farm north of town. On January 1, 1880, Mr. Layman was united in marriage to miss Mary Ether Lenskill of Pennsylvania. Five children were born to them: Harry, Laura Lee, John Clarence, Ralph Engle and Denton. Sketch of Life. The largest attended funeral ever held in Newell was that of E.P. Layman, widely known auctioneer, who passed away at his home in Newell Wednesday, August 25, at the age of 69 years, 9 months and 23 days. It had been planned to hold the services in the Methodist Church, but owing to the large attendance they were held in the park. Rev. J. P. Moore, pastor of the Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. Ernest Peatfield, pastor of the Congregational church, had charge of the services. The minister chose a text for his sermon which dealt with the life of the deceased. Music was furnished by Mrs. Bea Eno and Mrs William Holts. The body was laid to rest in the Newell Cemetery by the pall bearers, Albert Peterson, B.A Harkins, H. A. Vogel, G. W. Chaney, T. F. Householder and Henry Lehmkuhl. Relatives and friends from many points and a number of Mr. Layman's auctioneer friends were in attendance. The floral offerings were many and beautiful, showing the high esteem in which he was held. A SELF MADE MAN: Col. Layman was a self made man, and one of the most prominent and best known men of this community. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, of the Knights of Pythias, the Modern Woodmen of America and the Court of Honor. Mr. Layman started auctioneering in the fall of 1885 and was constantly in demand, every winter having more sale dates than he could fill. At one time he ran for county recorder, being beaten only by a few hundred votes by A.C. Smith. Elwood Price Layman was born in Gratsville, MD., November 2, 1865, a son of George Layman who was likewise born in Maryland, of German parentage. Mr. Layman pursued his early studies in the district schools of Maryland and while yet a young man came alone to the middle west, locating in Illinois. He worked during the summer and with his earnings, met the expenses of his schooling in the winter seasons. CAME WEST: One day he learned of an Iowa emigrant who wished to dispose of 80 acres of land in Buena Vista County. On March 19, 1879, being then a young man of 22 years, Mr. Layman started to his land in Buena Vista County, located just north of Newell. As time passed and he prospered in his farming operations, he invested in more land from time to time. In addition to his agricultural pursuits and auctioneering, he was a stock breeder. On January 1, 1880, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Esther Linskill, of Lanmark, Ill. To this union five children were born, four sons and one daughter. Harry Thornton, who was accidently killed May 6 of this year; Laura Lee, who died in infancy; John C., who now resides in Newell; Ralph Engle, who left this life July 27, 1917, and Deaton N., now residing in Newell. LEFT TO MOURN: He leaves to mourn, the wife and two sons, John C. and Deaton N.: three brothers and three sisters, Etta Engle, of Grantsville, MD: Norval M. Layman, George D Layman and Anna Mary Point, of Newell: Laura Lee Stocker, of Roundup, Mont,: Harry C. Layman of Chicago and 10 grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
