Description	:	When Norval was 16 years old he tried to enlist for the Civil War with his brother Jim, but was rejected. At the age of 17 he added a year to his age in order to get into military service. He was mustered into Company C of the 8th Iowa Cavalry on June 1, 1863. At Davenport, Iowa in the late summer of 1863 Norval contracted malaria toxemia, chronic diarrhea, rheumatism, all of which resulting in heart disease. On August 21, 1879 he married Barbara Hastings, the daughter of Joseph and Catherine Hastings. Barbara Edwards died on July 16, 1906 and then Norval lived in a cabin by a slough south of the Big Rock, about one-half mile west of the North United Brethren Church. Their children were Lucy Catherine who married Clarence Delmar Oxenreider, Clarisa Jane who married Richard R. Nickelson, Mary Ann who married Nate Penick, Joseph Abel who married Beulah Howard, Minnie Almetta who married Earl McCoy, Laura Ethel who married Clyde Elmo Shupe, and Norval Ralph Jr who married Ossie German. Norval later applied for and received an invalid pension (#667647) with the certificate (#920477). Fletcher Cemetery is north of Norwood, west of Highway 65 on an unmarked dirt road in Ottercreek Township of Lucas County, Iowa.
