Description	:	Nye Buris Hopkins was born near Marrietta,Ohio on September 22, 1847 and departed his life May 17, 1939, having reached the age of 91 yrs. 7 mo. and 25 days. Mr. Hopkin's parents died while he was quite young . Near the close of the Civil War, he enlisted in the 196th Ohio Infantry at the age of 16. After the war closed, he learned the carpenter trade and worked at this for 50 years, and had remarked many times he was proud of it, because Jesus of Nazaareth was a carpenter. Mr. Hopkin's parents died while he was quite young . Near the close of the Civil War, he enlisted in the 196th Ohio Infantry at the age of 16. After the war closed, he learned the carpenter trade and worked at this for 50 years, and had remarked many times he was proud of it, because Jesus of Nazaareth was a carpenter. He built many homes in and around Melcher and Dallas Iowa. He came to Iowa about 1867. On May 24, 1869, he and Rachel Ellen Waln were united in marriage at Knoxville, Iowa. This marriage was a long and happy one and on May 24th 1938, they celebrated their 69th wedding Anniversary and soon after, on July 16th 1938, his loving wife passed away. To this union were born 4 children.; Zora (deceased) , wife of John Swanburg, of Columbia; Melvin, deceased, Bessie, wife of Alt Damon of Purdy, and Eunice, wife of Blaine Stilwell of Oskaloosa, Iowa,with whom Mr. Hopkins had made his home since the death of his wife. He also left 4 grand children, Irvie Rigel of Columbia, Eva Ellen Crandall of Purdy, Arnold Stilwell of Spencer, and Geneva Vallem of Minneapolis, and 6 great-grand children. He also leaves a host of friends who will miss him from his old familiar spots in the community. Mr. Hopkins united with the Methodist church in early life and of which local organization he was a member of many years. The clean noble life he lived showed in his countenance and was proof of his Christian character. Funeral services were conducted in the Dallas Methodist church, with Rev. Azel L. Smith officiating and Rev. Edgar L. Knight of Oskaloosa assisting. Burial was in the Gosport cemetery.
