Contributor: Julia Kinsey (48922386) • [email protected] : Big Timber Pioneer, February 7, 1935 One of the largest funerals in the history of Big Timber, Monday afternoon, was a fitting and appropriate farewell to Ole Birkeland, for many years a prominent stockman of this county, who died at the Big Timber hospital Friday night after a short illness with influenza and gall bladder trouble. Old friends from all parts of the county were here, and Grey Cliff, home of deceased attended en masse. During the funeral hour the Citizens Bank & Trust Co., of which he had been a liberal patron for many years, closed its doors as a mark of respect. Ole Birkeland was born in Norway, December 1868, a son of Osten Birkeland. In 1895, he came to this country, stopping first a Halstead, Minn., where he followed carpentering. In March 1896, he arrived in Big Timber, working for a time for Jacob Hoyem, sheepman of Howie. June 4, 1898, he married Inga Haverson, widow of Jacob Halverson, prominent sheepman of the Sweet Grass, who also built the Grand hotel in this city in 1891. Few present residents of this city know, and many of the old-timers have forgotten that in 1901 deceased was proprietor of the Grand Hotel, it having passed to his wife with the Halverson estate. After operating it for a time, Mr. Birkeland turned it over to Cook & Witten, who later transferred the lease to W. O. Tucker. The death of Mr. Birkeland leaves S. A. Perrine and L. F. Douthett sole survivors of businessmen who operated here in the early days. After leaving the hotel Mr. Birkeand went into the stock business, operating with cattle and sheep, principally the former, and became one of the most prominent stockmen of the county. For years he was active in the Sweet Grass County Woolgrowers Association and other stock associations. He was successful in the sheep business when it was a good business, and took his losses later on with the rest. In addition to the main Birkeland ranch just this side of Grey Cliff, he also owned another up Deer Creek. Besides the widow, he leaves three children, Olga Fetzer of Seattle, Joran McNickle of New York City, Eyestein Birkeland of the Upper Deer creek ranch; two stepchildren, Ronald Halverson of Grey Cliff, Ingrid Doyle of Keewatin, Minn.; and 11 grandchildren. His worth to the community was the esteem in which he was held was best attested by the overcrowding of seats and aisles of the church at the funeral obsequies and the beautiful flowers.
