Description	:	Ole Gulbrandson grew up on the Opdal farmstead in Vang, part of the Valdres region of south-central Norway. He was the oldest of five children of Gulbrand Olson Opdal and his wife Marith Olsdatter. In 1840, Ole married Gunvor Knutsdatter Lunde at the Øye church in Vang. Together they raised eight children in Norway, in addition to four others who died in infancy. After an avalanche nearly destroyed the familyʼs home in 1860, Ole and Gunvor decided to emigrate to America. They left in the spring of 1862, walking over the mountains 170 miles from Vang to Bergen on Norwayʼs western coast.... They left in the spring of 1862, walking over the mountains 170 miles from Vang to Bergen on Norwayʼs western coast. From Bergen, a sailing ship took them to Quebec. Then they would have traveled up the St. Lawrence River and through the Great Lakes and finally overland by wagon or oxcart to Dane County, Wisconsin. All told, the journey may have taken three months. In 1864, Ole and Gunvor were living near Decorah, Iowa, where their American-born daughter Ingeborg was baptized at the Little Iowa Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran congregation. Later they moved to Mitchell County, Iowa, then to Nunda Township in Freeborn County, Minnesota, and finally to Silver Lake Township in Worth County, Iowa, where they purchased a farm and settled in to stay.
