Description	:	Ole Sanvik was born August 29, 1879, in Norway, the son of Ole and Katie Halderson Sanvik. Coming to this country with his parents at the age of four, he was reared on a South Dakota farm. His first job was herding cattle, then he cleared the land, cut logs and railway ties in Minnesota until 1899. Coming to this country with his parents at the age of four, he was reared on a South Dakota farm. His first job was herding cattle, then he cleared the land, cut logs and railway ties in Minnesota until 1899. He began a mercantile business at Weggeland, Minnesota, under the firm name of Weggeland and Sanvik. This firm also had a cheese factory. On March 29, 1907 Ole and Lena Berge were married. Seven children were born to them: Selmer, Orris, Agnes, Obert, Lillian, Robert and Norma. In 1919 he moved the family to Montana, homesteading twenty-one miles north of Gildford. Here, four of their seven children were born. In 1919 they survived a drastic prairie fire which destroyed valuable crops and pasture. All their water had to be hauled for two miles. In 1918 Mr. Sanvik was elected county assessor of Hill County for a two-year term. He and his family then made their home at Havre, returning to their homestead in 1920. In 1923 the grasshoppers devoured everything in sight, leaving no feed for cattle or horses. They then left the farm and moved to an irrigated farm one and one-half miles south of Harlem. Their son, Orris was injured in a high school football game and passed away on November 2, 1926. In 1928 the family held an auction and moved to Rudyard where they purchased the S.J. Tracht General Merchandise Store. In 1929, Sanvik was joined in the business by his son, Selmer, who had been living at Hogeland with his wife and infant duaghter. A fifty foot addition was built onto the store in 1934, and in 1938 they put in one hundred frozen food lockers. They enjoyed a flourishing meat business as well as retail groceries, hardware and appliances. Obert came into the business, later managing the general store in Joplin. He later decided to farm north of Inverness and sold the store to Fred Knopes. Robert became active in the business after attending meat cutting school in Toledo, Ohio, in 1942. Ole retired in 1945 and moved to Kalispell, where he passed away in May of 1955. Mrs. Sanvik died there in May 1964. >From "Grit, Guts, and Gusto, A History of Hill County," 1976, page 146
