Sander, a resident of this valley since 1881 died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ralph Pinckard, on Willowood Farm, Tuesday afternoon at 1:40 o'clock, following a short illness. She died at the same ranch to which she came as a bride in April, 1881. This ranch, one mile northeast of Ellensburg, is one of the best known country estates in Central Washington, and was for years the scene of many community events and many people of prominence were entertained there. Mrs. Sander was the daughter of pioneers. Her father, Charles Agustan Cleman, a native of Tennesee and her mother, Rebecca Griffith Cleman, moved west from Missouri in the early fifties and settled near Salem, Oregon. Mrs. Sander was born in Oregon July 4, 1863. They moved to Yakima in 1864 when Mrs. Sander was a baby and homesteaded on the Wenas. Married at Union Gap On April 6, 1881, Mr. and Mrs. Sander were married at Oldtown, now Union Gap, and immediately moved to Ellensburg where Mr. Sander had filed a homestead in 1871. However, after filing the homestead he had continued to operate a flour mill in Yakima county and alternated his time between Yakima and Kittitas counties until his marriage. In 1882 they erected a flour mill here, which Mr. Sander operated until it burned in 1890. Their first residence was a log cabin on the homestead but later they erected the beautiful Willowood Farm home, for years the most pretentious in the entire valley and with the most beautiful grounds. When Mr. Sander came to this valley, there were only ten families here and his filings held the first water right on Wilson creek. In 1887 he established the first water system for Ellensburg and operated it until 1891 when he sold to an eastern corporation known as the Ellensburg Water company. Large holdings At the time of his death in 1910 the land holdings amount to 1400 acres in the valley. This property Mrs. Sander continued to develop and at one time her Holstein herds were famous all over the Northwest. She was generally regarded as a business woman of exceptional ability throughout the active period of her life. Surviving Mrs. Sander are four children, three daughters, Mrs. R. R. Pinckard of Ellensburg, Mrs. Robert L. Rutter Jr., of Ellensburg, Mrs. W. D. Hinton of Los Angeles and one son, Fred Sander of Nevada. There are also seven grandchildren. The funeral will be at the Honeycutt chapel at 10 o'clock Saturday morning. The Rev. John T. Ledger, rector of Grace church will be the minister. The body will lie in state Friday and up to 9:30 o'clock Saturday morning. Hospitality Farm Mrs. Sander continued to actively operate the big farm until comparatively recently, and took a keen interest in its development and in the beautification of the home grounds. During the period of promotion of the Kittitas High Line canal many public gatherings were held on the grounds of her home, many congressional committees and many high government officials, including cabinet members and governors were entertained on those grounds. Many hearings and discussions were held on the spacious lawns. Also she was most generous in turning over her grounds and home for many receptions and banquets for various state conventions over a period of many years.
