He was the eldest son of John D. and Elizabeth (Langdon) Wells, who were the first white settlers to establish a permanent home in Marshall county. John D. Wells, was born in Wells Town- ship, Marshall County, Kansas on Septem- ber 8, 1862. He was the eldest son of John D. and Elizabeth (Langdon) Wells, who were the first white settlers to establish a permanent home in Marshall county. John D. Wells was a native of Kentucky and Elizabeth Landon of Ohio. After their marriage they lived for a short time in Iowa, coming to their future home in Kansas in 1855. Our subject was one of a family that numbered ten children, several of whom died in infancy. Those that grew to infancy have been intimately identified with the history and development of the county. Mr. Wells acquired the best education the schools of the vicinity afforded in that early day, being a pupil in District No. 1 at Barrett, Kansas, the first school district organized in the county, and then engaged in farming which he followed the greater part of his life. He was united in marriage to Helen Warren a native of Kentucky, who came to this county with her parents and preceding year. To this union was born six children. One died in infancy and another in early life. Their daughter, Anna, married Richard Fairchild and is deceased. Marguerite is Mrs. Charles Jenkins, Blue Rapids, Kansas, Elizabeth is Mrs. John Jones, of Barrett, Kansas, Mark Wells, retired from active work as a farmer in 1912 and moved to Barrett, Kansas where in 1914 he engaged in the grain and coal business, which he conducted for many years, and later operated a general merchandise store. Several years ago he disposed of the store and spent his last days in the seclusion of his home. He passed away at his home in Barrett on April 2, 1934 of an attack of heart disease, that lasted only a few minutes He is survived by his wife and children, and several grandchildren; three sisters and one brother; Mrs. Belle Bennett, Mrs. Anna Pendergast, Mrs. Veda McConchie and Robert J. Wells. He was a member of the M.E. Church and the funeral services were at the Barrett Methodist Church on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. with Reverend Marshall officiating. Interment was on the old Wels homestead southwest of Frankfort, Kansas.
