Deceased had lived in the canyon for several years and for some time this summer had been a member of the construction crew working on the Whitewood tunnel. Lead Daily Call newspaper, September 17, 1929 - "Funeral services for Oliver Hofmaster, 70, who was found dead early Sunday morning in his cabin on Little Spearfish creek, about five miles from Savoy, were held at 3:30 o'clock this afternoon from the Rounsevell parlors and burial took place in the South Lead cemetery. Deceased was survived by his wife, Mrs. Mae Hofmaster, of Aberdeen, this state, who was unable to attend, and a step-daughter, Mrs. Velma Sprague of this city. Following the finding of the body by a neighbor, County Coroner A.S. Jackson and Deputy Sheriff Helmer went to the scene but an investigation revealed that death had resulted from natural causes and no inquest was held." South Dakota Marriages 1905 - 1949 show that Oliver Hoffmaster of Lead, age 58, and May C. Campbell of Lead, age 48, were married in Lead on September 26, 1915 by Rev. W.J. Calfee. The 1920 U.S. Census finds Oliver Hofmaster, age 61, residing in Terry, Lawrence County, South Dakota. The document noted that he was a farmer and that both of his parents were born in Germany. Also included in the household were his wife Mae (age 53, born Wisconsin) and 15-year-old Hazel Campbell, a stepdaughter. Rounsevell Mortuary records of Lead note that Oliver Hofmaster died on September 15, 1929 in a cabin on Upper Spearfish Creek from angina pectoris; aged about 68 years; occupation - rancher; divorced; funeral on September 17, 1929 at the cemetery, Rev. Campbell officiating; buried in the Municipal Cemetery in South Lead; undertaker - G.A. Rounsevell; funeral expenses charged off as a bad debt on December 1, 1934.
