Onyx "Ray" Gaines 1929 - 2009 Ray Gaines, 79, of St. Louis, and of Clarence, passed away at his home in St. Louis on Friday, April 17, 2009. He was born in Beech Grove, Arkansas, on July 20, 1929, the son of Rada Garner and Henry Ray Gaines. On May 7, 1955, he was married to Anna Lou Wood in St. Louis at the West End Church of Christ. Ray is survived by his wife, Anna Lou of 54 years; four children, David Gaines, Beth Braden and husband, Mark, Phillip Gaines and wife, Laura, and Paul Gaines; four grandchildren, Katie and Rebecca Gaines, and Sarah and Paige Braden; two sisters, Treasure (Verneal) Gaines and Jean Gaines; and other relatives and friends. Ray loved to swim and play baseball. He played professional baseball in the Cotton States League in 1950 and might have gone to the major leagues had not the war came. He was called to service by the US Army on April 11, 1951, to go to Korea and served in the 4th Section, Battery B of the 145th Field Artillery Battalion. Ray was a skilled machinist and worked for the Measuregraph Company for 30 years building re-winders and measuring machines. He said that he also made a part with a milling machine that went to the moon with the Apollo Lunar Module program. Ray enjoyed coming to their country farm home in Clarence "The Plantation" to hunt and fish. He was a member of the Kirkwood Church of Christ, the Clarence VFW Post 8177, and the American Legion. Visitation was held Sunday, April 19, 2009, from 1 to 5:30 p.m. at KUTIS South County Chapel, 5255 Lemay Ferry Rd. (at Butler Hill), then visitation was held at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Clarence Monday, April 20, 2009, 12 noon until time of funeral service at 2 p.m. Rev. Beryl Cragg officiated, and Rev. Mark Braden gave the eulogy. Burial was in Union Cemetery, south of Clarence. Pallbearers were Jay Boleach, Kris Wood, Willie Wood, Brent Wood, Larry Wood and Danny Wood. Memorials may be made to the Clarence VFW Post 8177 or to Union Cemetery.
