Description	:	Opal Ferris was born February 4, 1909, in Supply, Oklahoma, daughter of Homer and Sylvia Ellis. Opal had one brother and three sisters. Opal had written down that her parents, along with her and her brother, Oldham, and sister, Mable, left the first day of April 1913 to go to Colorado. The next morning when they woke... Read More	Opal Ferris was born February 4, 1909, in Supply, Oklahoma, daughter of Homer and Sylvia Ellis. Opal had one brother and three sisters. Opal had written down that her parents, along with her and her brother, Oldham, and sister, Mable, left the first day of April 1913 to go to Colorado. They loaded the wagons and were informed by their uncle, Will, that it would be bad luck if they started Friday, so they and Grandpa Sellers and some of his family started out and went to Woodward, Oklahoma, and camped for the night. The next morning when they woke up, Opal's pet puppy was gone. Her father walked around and called, but never did find it. She was told that it probably had gone back home. It took 20 days to come to Colorado in the covered wagon. There was a stove in the wagon where her mother did the cooking. There was a bed across the back end of the wagon, and that was where the kids spent the days. Oldham was one year old and it was up to Mable and Opal to keep him there. Mable was three years old and Opal was four. The last night on the trip was spent a mile east of Kit Carson. It took all day to come from there and was dark when they arrived at where aunt, Rose, and uncle, Herb, lived about 10 miles southwest of Arroya. Sisters, Rhoda and Virginia, were born after arriving in Colorado. Opal went through eighth grade then went to work. She worked several places as cook and housekeeper taking care of families, etc. September 25, 1935, Opal married Robert Ferris. They experienced their first loss with the stillborn death of a daughter. Ronald was born in 1938, then Wilbur in 1939, who died at the age of nine months. Vivian, Sonora, Terry and Ethel followed to make their family complete. Opal lived on the Ferris homestead until November 2000 when she moved to Hudson to live with daughter Sonora and her husband, Rolland. Opal Ferris died December 11, 2001, at the age of 92 years, 10 months, seven days. She is preceded in death by her parents, one sister, one brother, her husband, and two children. She is survived by two sisters, Mable Williams of Eads and Virginia Trainer of Hugo; five children, Ronald(Ethel) Ferris, Vivian Henderson, Sonora(Rolland) Jones, Terry Ferris and Ethel Eileen Ferris; as well as 17 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and two great-great granddaughters. Funeral services for Opal Ferris were held December 17, 2001, at the United Methodist Church in Eads with Rev. John Nadasi officiating. Philomene Liesen and Betty Crow provided the piano and organ music with Gary Liesen serving as vocalist, singing The Old Rugged Cross and In The Garden. Casket bearers were Dennis Ferris, Dan Ferris, Douglas Jones, Quinton Ferris, Tony Ferris, Corey Person, Ryan Weber, Richard Henderson, Wesley Henderson, and Robert Henderson. Honorary casket bearers were Leonard Price, George Ansley, avid Ansley, Richard Morgan and Paul Zimmerman. The final Committal services were held at the Eads Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Colorado Boys Ranch. Arrangements were under the direction of Brown Funeral Home.
