When Bob was only 4, the Ferris' moved to Colorado where they homesteaded northeast of Haswell. For the remainder of Bob's life, he would live in Colorado, all of it but less than one year on the family homestead. Bob completed his formal education through the eighth grade, and on September 25, 1935, Robert Ferris and Opal Ellis were married. In 1936, they would experience their first loss with the stillborn death of their first child. May 11, 1938, their first son, Ronald was born. The Ferris' second son, Wilbur, was born July 14, 1939, but tragically died at the age of nine months. Vivian was born November 6, 1940, followed by Sonora May 29, 1943. November 19, 1950, their youngest son Terry, was born, and Ethel Eilleen made their family complete September 23, 1952. For 42 years, Bob faithfully drove a school bus. Throughout his tenure, he drove for school district in Lincoln, Cheyenne and Kiowa Counties. Bob had an entrepreneurial spirit about him, and at a very young age began dealing in scrap iron. In 1948, Bob and Opal moved to Aroya, where Opal ran the Post Office and Bob opened a grocery store. This lasted less than a year, and they moved back to the family farm. In 1958, Bob bought the filling station from Kelsey Kirk, and in 1960, they bought the Shamrock station. In 1962, they put in a tire shop and began Ferris and Sons Truck Line, purchasing their first trucking permit from Hubert Martin. All the while, Bob's love for the scrap iron business increased, and in 1965, they moved their iron business to its current location on Highway 59 in Kit Carson. One can only imagine the tons of scrap iron Bob loaded and unloaded by hand. Bob's love for animals was evident by the way he cared for his animals on the farm. He loved farming and ranching, but realized that he needed his other interests to keep the family going. His ambition and hard work got much accomplished, but his helpmate of 65 years, Opal, contributed many hours to the family's success. Throughout all the years, his son, Ronald, worked side by side his father as they fixed and sold tires, pumped gas and crushed metal. Perhaps one of Bob's greatest satisfactions came from his contribution during World War II when he gathered iron from Ordway to the Kansas state line and reported piles of iron to the U.S. government so that they could use these materials to help win the war. For his efforts, he received a letter of recognition from the Department of the Interior. Bob loved many things. He loved his animals. He loved hamburgers with no onions, and cream pies. He loved the challenge of being in business, and the joys and adversities of being a farmer, but, most of all, he loved his family. Bob was very proud when Ryan got to where he could recognize the difference in metals, and took great interest in Brandon's mowing business. Some think that, perhaps, he saw some of himself in these young men. If something didn't work at first, Bob kept working on it until it did work. He and George Ansley enjoyed exchanging gag gifts, and he was a good friend and neighbor to everyone. Robert O. Ferris died July 14, 2001, at the age of 95 years, four months and five days. After a lifetime of hard work and honesty, he leaves behind his legacy. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Opal; children, Ronald(Ethel) Ferris, Vivian Henderson, Sonora(Rolland) Jones, Terry Ferris and Ethel Eilleen Ferris; 17 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; and two great great granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents, two children and two sisters. Funeral services for Robert O. Ferris were held July 17, 2001, at the Kit Carson High School with L. D. Nelson officiating. Mr. Nelson talked about how Bob had lived a life of integrity and honesty. He encouraged those in attendance to do the same. Philomene Liesen provided the piano music, with Gary Liesen providing the vocal music. The selected songs were "The Old Rugged Cross" and In the Garden." Serving as casket bearers were Dennis Ferris, Douglas Jones, Richard Henderson, Ryan Weber, Wesley Henderson, Robert Henderson, Tony Person and Corey Person. Honorary casket bearers were some of Bob's very close friends, Dean Pelton, Glenn Getman, Ernest Jones, David Ansley and Richard Morgan. Final Committal services were held at the Eads Cemetery in Eads. Following the graveside service, the family and friends traveled back to Kit Carson for a time of meal and fellowship. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Brown Funeral Home.
