She waged a courageous battle with cancer. Opal was born January 26, 1925 in Guthrie Center, Iowa, to Emerson and Mary (Barger) Shelley. She married Howard Prettyman in 1943. Opal, Howard and sons moved to Des Moines in 1955 where she resided until 1987. She worked at Dahl's Foods, AMF Western Tool, and Delavan Manufacturing, before retiring from Massey Ferguson. Her retirement home was Guthrie Center, Iowa. Opal spent her retirement traveling the United States and much of the world. Many of her travels were missionary trips. Grandchildren, traveling, church activities, gardening, bird feeding and wintering in Arizona made for an enjoyable retirement. Opal is survived by her sons Terry and Richard of Des Moines and Daniel of Guthrie Center. Also surviving are brother Robert (Marcella) of Bagley, Iowa, eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Opal was preceded in death by her husband, Howard, brothers, Glen, Lyle, Wayne, Floyd, and a sister, Mary Shelley Wine. Her body has been cremated. A private burial of cremains will be held in Guthrie Center at a future date. A celebration of a long complete life will be held Saturday, May 3 2008, at 1 p.m. at the Gatchel United Methodist Church, 1909 MLK Parkway, Des Moines, Iowa. Memorial contributions may be made to Gatchel United Methodist Church or Hospice of Central Iowa.
