He was born on May 13, 1930 at Webster, to Otis and Clara (Schulz) Olson. He was baptized and confirmed at Helgen Lutheran Church near Florence. He was raised in Day County and attended grade school at District 214. In 1944, the family moved to a farm in Codington County. He graduated from Florence High School in 1948. In 1951, he enlisted in the US Marines and was stationed in Korea until his discharge in 1954. After serving, he returned home and farmed with his dad and worked other jobs in the area. In 1963 he moved to Minneapolis and worked for Louis DeGidio as a technician. In 1964, he met Marilyn (Gustafson) Thompson and on May 31, 1978 they married at Milbank. In 1991 the couple moved to Eden to be closer to his sister Janet and in 1993 they moved to Waubay. After Marilyn died in 2006, he continued to live in Waubay with his sister Janet and her husband Darrell. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, watching The Lawrence Welk Show, reading, spending time with his cats and dog. Every day he looked forward to Tootie Berger coming over for a cup of coffee to reminisce about old times. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion. He also was a Pipefitters Union member in Minneapolis. Survivors include his sister, Janet (Darrell) Schmidt of Waubay; and sister-in-law, Barbara (Conrad) Plasier of Sioux Falls.
