He graduated from Spencer High School in 1952 and was offered a professional baseball contract with the Kansas City Royals. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was stationed in London. He moved to Leadville, Colo., and started his career in the mining industry. He and his wife, Louise, later purchased a fishing camp in Nestor Falls, Ontario. They also lived in Nampa, Idaho, for 25 years, and he worked for Hewlett Packard. They returned to Spencer."
