They had one son, Frank Newton Woodworth (13 Oct 1861 – 21 Oct 1918). Orson was a farmer until, on October 29, 1862 (age 25), during the Civil War, he enlisted, for what was supposed to be a three year period, in Company E of the 6th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. The company was “mustered in” on February 6, 1863 and joined the Regiment at Falmouth, Virginia on March 9, 1863. From March 17 through November 27, 1863, the Regiment “bore an honorable part” in 16 separate battles, engagements and skirmishes with the Confederates, mostly in Virginia and Maryland, but also including a minor role in the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (July 1-3). From early December 1863 until early May 1864, the 6th Ohio spent their winter encampment in Warrenton, Virginia. While headquartered there, the Regiment spent time pursuing Mosby’s Rangers, a Confederate partisan cavalry which was conducting a campaign of lightning raids on Union supply lines and who were led by Colonel John S. Mosby, “The Gray Ghost”. On May 3, 1864, the 6th Ohio joined the Army of the Potomac, led by Lt. General Ulysses S. Grant, in what became known as the Overland Campaign, a series of battles fought in Virginia during May and June 1864 targeting a drive to the Confederate capitol of Richmond and key city of Petersburg. On May 28, 1864, Orson was mortally wounded at one of those battles, which became known as the Battle of Haw’s Shop or Enon Church in Hanover County, Virginia. The seven hour battle was inconclusive, but it was one of the bloodiest cavalry battles of the war. It was an unusual battle in that it was fought mostly by dismounted cavalry, many of which were protected by earthworks. Orson succumbed to his wounds eleven days later, on June 8, 1864, at nearby White House Landing, a major Union Army supply base in New Kent County, Virginia. Orson is buried in Hayes Cemetery, Wayne Twp. Mira (age 23, with a two year old son) applied for a Veteran Widow’s pension on July 22, 1864. At the 1900 census, Myra owned her home free of any mortgage. It doesn’t appear that Myra remarried; she died in 1903 and is buried in row 20 of Hayes Cemetery in a plot with Orson, their son Frank and Frank’s wife Lillie. Contributor: David Rood, Jr.
