Carmel Regional Medical Center in Pittsburg. He was born March 4, 1916, in Appleton City, Mo., to Edgar and Maggie (Kennedy) Melton. He attended area schools. He was a painter for Pittsburg Steel for more than 18 years, retiring in 1978. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was honorably discharged on Jan. 16, 1946. He was born March 4, 1916, in Appleton City, Mo., to Edgar and Maggie (Kennedy) Melton. He attended area schools. He was a painter for Pittsburg Steel for more than 18 years, retiring in 1978. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was honorably discharged on Jan. 16, 1946. On Oct. 9, 1939, he married Jessie Ashmore. She preceded him in death on Oct. 28, 2000. Survivors include four daughters, Vanita Newport of Pittsburg, Donna Howard of Frontenac, and Pamela Bushehri and Deenna Reed, both of Pittsburg; two sons, Raymond Melton of Weir and Gary Melton of Pittsburg; one brother, Lester Melton of Weir; one sister, Alma Jones of Pittsburg; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Merle Melton, Wilford Melton, Joe Melton and Everett Melton; one sister, Goldie Hartshorn; and five grandchildren. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Crocker Cemetery in rural Pittsburg , with the Rev. Sandy Stallings officiating. There will be a flag presentation by Benjamin A. Fuller American Legion Post No. 64 of Pittsburg. Informal visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg. Friends may call at the funeral home after 5 p.m. today.
