Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 28 at the Baptist Church in Mason City. Orvin Cox was born at Broken Bow on Dec. 5, 1921 to Samuel P. and Nora Martha (Juker) Cox. He lived in Berwyn until 1937 and then moved to a farm northeast of Mason City with his mother and stepfather, Nora and Wesley Harris. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1940. He enlisted in the service in June 1942, and served during World War II. He passed through the Straits of Gibraltar on Christmas Eve, 1942, and served three years in the Army-Air Force Engineers in North Africa and Italy until October 1945. He married Joan Maurine Holm on June 22, 1949 at her parents' farm south of Mason City. They were married 59 1/2 happy years. Prior to the service, he was employed at the Mason State Bank. Upon return, he resumed his position and served 40 years, retiring in June of 1986. He was also a projectionist at the Star Theater in Mason City for many years. He was active in his community, an avid baseball player, fisherman, hunter, gardener and card player. Cox played baseball with the Mason City town team from 1938 until 1956. The team won numerous league championships and playoffs. After the town team ended in 1956, he played softball with teams from Mason City and Broken Bow. He served his community as the Village Clerk for 22 years, an official weather observer for 20 years, and was one of the first three EMT's certified in Mason City (he continued as an EMT for 12 years). He also spent many years as a member of the Mason City Volunteer Firemen, School Board, Cemetery Board, Community Service Club, Baptist Church, Senior Citizens, Gun Club, Rat Lake Club, American Legion, and helped track times at the annual Mason City Rodeo. In 1988, he received the Ak-Sar-Ben Good Neighbor award. He is survived by his wife, Joan of Mason City; his son, Ron of Chicago, Ill.; his granddaughter, Kris Cox of Washington D.C.; sister, Faye Whitehead of Stratton; step-sister, Vera Olsen of Mesa, Ariz. and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Orval, brothers, Kenneth and Claris, niece, Diane, step-sister, Thelma Witchey, step-brother, Pat Harris and his parents.
