Son of Thomas Dowling Wallace and Sarah Theresa Nichols OBITUARY THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT Chariton, Iowa Thursday, July 29, 1920 OSCAR ALLEN WALLACE Oscar Allen Wallace, son of Thos. D. and Sarah Wallace, was born in Morrow county, Ohio, on January 2, 1849, and passed away from this life to his heavenly home on July 20, 1920, his age being 71 years, 6 months and 18 days. Oscar Wallace was an old settler, having been around Norwood most of the time for the past 55 years. He was well known and highly respected throughout the county and his passing will be deplored by all. He was united in marriage to Sarah E. Ham on September 6, 1871. To this union were born four children, Fannie Iona, who passed from his life April 25, 1899; Arthur S. of Lucas; Lewis C. of Stotesbury, Mo.; and Mrs. Mable Wheeler of Norwood, at whose home he died, and where funeral services were held. Besides the above he is survived by five grandchildren and two sisters, five brothers having preceded him in death. Those living are William F. of Truro; Theodore of Chariton; Mrs. Nissie B. Ackors of Des Moines; Mrs. Cora T. Officer of Leon; and James E. of Corning, all of whom were present during his sickness and death; besides a host of other kindred and friends. He came to Iowa with his parents in 1852 and has since lived in this state. Oscar had a very receptive and retentive mind of early impressions. As a boy of thirteen he was nearly crushed by the horrors of war when his father went to the front in 1862, but he bravely assumed the responsibilities with his mother at home. As a good soldier he went forth with the affairs of life in his father's stead for two and one-half years. Those impressions never left his mind. Religiously, he early learned the ways of Christ and assisted his mother at the family altar. Following such a life in his youth he formed a noble character. He was a kind and loving husband, father and brother and a faithful friend. He was a good citizen with more than usual interest in public affairs. All his life he set a good example in Christian living and he has gone to his reward in heaven. Funeral services were conducted July 22 by Rev. E. W. Curtis, he and the deceased having been life long friends. His favorite songs of the Sunday school were most beautifully sung by the Norwood quartet. Interment was made in the Fletcher cemetery. Pallbearers were Alec Pennington, W. W. Clore, R. O. Miller, James Keen, John Shelton and A. L. Arnold. Mr. Wallace was the Herald-Patriot's efficient correspondent at Norwood and we will greatly miss his weekly letters and his welcome visits at this office.
