Description	:	Oscar Alwood “Sonny” Schulz, waterman, restaurateur, politician, entrepreneur, father, grandfather and friend, passed away Nov. 19, 2018, at his home. He was 85 years old. He was presently owner of Fisherman’s Inn and the Crab Deck with his late wife Betty and three sons, Andy, Jody, and Tracy. Read More	Oscar Alwood “Sonny” Schulz, waterman, restaurateur, politician, entrepreneur, father, grandfather and friend, passed away Nov. 19, 2018, at his home. He was 85 years old. He was presently owner of Fisherman’s Inn and the Crab Deck with his late wife Betty and three sons, Andy, Jody, and Tracy. Sonny was born on Kent Island in Chester, Md., the son of the late Maude Nola Clough and Oscar Alwood Schulz. A graduate of Stevensville High School, class of 1951, he spent the early part of his life working on the water even while going to school. From 1953 to 1955, he was a U.S. Army sergeant stationed in Korea with the 25th Infantry Division. Upon returning from Korea, he would soon own and operate the charter fishing boat Maverick and marry Betty Thomas in 1956 as he continued to work on the water until 1971, when they opened the newly built Fisherman’s Inn. The inn burned to the ground on Dec 22, 1980. It was rebuilt and reopened again July 28, 1981. The adjoining A.C. Harris Packing Co. property was purchased in 1972, and it was kept as such until it was remodeled in 1991, keeping the front as a year-round seafood market and the back overlooking the water as Fisherman’s Crab Deck. Sonny always enjoyed politics. He was treasurer for Queen Anne’s County, Md., for two terms from 1971 through 1979 and commissioner for Queen Anne’s County, Md., for two terms from 1982-1986 and 1990-1994. He served as past director and chairman of the board of the Maryland Restaurant Association, in addition to the Maryalnd Tourism Development Board for six years, the Chesapeake Bay Study Commission, a board member of Maryland Association of Counties, past director of Chesapeake Bay Seafood Industry and past president of Delmarva Seafood Advisory Council. Serving as a member of the Economic Development Commission, a charter member in 1963 and honorary post governor of the Bay County Moose Lodge, first commander and life member of the American Legion #278, a life member of the VFW #7464, member of the Centreville Masonic Lodge #180, member of the Scottish Rite, Boumi Temple, Royal Order of Jesters, past president and life member of the Kent Island Lions Club, honorary member of the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department, charter member of the Kent Island Elks, member of Kent Island Yacht Club and president for three years of the Maryland Charter Boat Association. His awards have been: Seafood Ambassador Award in 1979, Queen Anne’s County Outstanding Citizen in 1981, Southern Industrial Development Council’s Volunteer of the Year for 1985, Queen Anne’s County Chamber of Commerce’s Business Person of the Year in 1996, The Lion’s Club Melvin Jones Award in 2000, the Kent Island Rotary Business Person of the Year for 2002, and he was named Admiral of the Chesapeake in 1966 by Governor J. Millard Tawes. Sonny enjoyed vacations in Germany, Jamaica and Mexico, fishing in Costa Rica and especially his later years in Florida. He is survived by three sons, Andy (Therese), Jody (Sheri), Tracy (Stacey); seven grandsons, Dusty, Kirby, Hunter, Kolby, Holden, Dorsey and Harrison. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Betty Schulz in 2011; a brother, Johnny; and a sister, Charlotta. Visitations will be held on Monday, Nov. 26, from noon to 2 p.m. and from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Kent Island United Methodist Church, where a funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 27, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Stevensville Cemetery.
