Description	:	Oscar Emil Eckland, better known as "Swede", by his family and friends, was born September 22, 1909 in Skjold, Norway to Osmund Imanuel Eikeland and Brita Malene Sovik. At the age of 16 years, Oscar came to the United States with his brother Erling and his uncle Lars Eikeland. At that time the three changed the spelling of their last name to Eckland. At the age of 16 years, Oscar came to the United States with his brother Erling and his uncle Lars Eikeland. At that time the three changed the spelling of their last name to Eckland. Oscar was united in marriage to Mary Carter. To this union were born four children. June 13, 1941. He served in World War II and received the American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. He was honorably discharged from the Army on August 31, 1945. Oscar was united in marriage to Donna Louder on May 23, 1953 in Pierre, South Dakota. They made their home in Murdo, where Oscar worked construction, worked on the Ole Iversen Ranch, and then worked for William Francis Plumbing. Later, Oscar and Donna owned and operated a filling station, grocery store, beauty shop and café in Okaton, South Dakota. In the early 1960’s they moved to Rapid City, where Oscar worked for a construction company until his retirement. His wife Donna preceded him in death on November 5th, 1980. He continued to make his home in Rapid City until entering the Good Samaritan Home on April 5th 2001, where he resided until his death. Oscar was a member of the VFW of Rapid City.
