Description	:	Oscar Henry Lehmann, son of Henry and Charlotte Lehmann, was born August 1, 1843, in Leipzig, Germany, where he grew to manhood. In the year 1866, two years after his brother, Caesar, had set sail for New York, he followed on a sail ship, taking him nine weeks to make the trip. The cost was $33.50. Read More	Oscar Henry Lehmann, son of Henry and Charlotte Lehmann, was born August 1, 1843, in Leipzig, Germany, where he grew to manhood. In the year 1866, two years after his brother, Caesar, had set sail for New York, he followed on a sail ship, taking him nine weeks to make the trip. The cost was $33.50. In New York he worked at the florist trade until he came to Jacjsonville, Illinois, where he spent two years when his brother, Caesar, who was a tanner by trade, joined him and they decided to risk the wilds of the county west of the Mississippi. They traveled for weeks in a covered wagon crossing the Missouri River on a ferry boat. They finally decided to homestead in Ellsworth County, Kansas. The brothers used to every luxuary in Germany became true pioneers in a land where much hardship came to them. One year it was a prairie fire that burned everything in the country but the dugouts where they lived. Another year it was the grasshoppers that came and took the crops. Mr. Lehman and Miss Elizaberth Stauff, of Arenzville, Illinois were united in marriage December 31, 1874, after the young bride accompanied her husband to the homestead in Kansas. To this union were born thirteen children, eight daughters and five sons. The deceased are: Albert Caesar, December 27, 1911, Charles Edwin, September 24, 1924; and his wife Lucille Taylor April 13, 1919; brother, Caesar, September 9, 1921. Survivors are: Mrs. Katie (Walter)Henderson, Wichita, Kansas, Emil H, Garden City, Kansas, Mrs. Carrie Amelia (Tom)Erickson, 2nd Clayton Taylor, Mrs. Minnie Clara (Arthur)Hunt and Mrs. Adelia Laura (Creet)Meredith, Eureka, Mrs. Lena Charlotte 1st Petty Mitchell, 2nd Charles Anklan, Rollette, North Dakota; ninteen grandchildren and a host of friends remain to cherish his memory. Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Lehmann moved to Greenwood County in 1911 where they lived in their son, Emil's place. In 1925 he moved with his son, Emil, to Garden City where he made his home until August 1928, when he came to live with his daughter, Carrie. He also spent much time with his daughters, Mrs. Margaret (Harry)Jackson and Mrs. Adella Meredith. Oscar Lehmann was educted in Leipzig, Germany, He was a member of the Lutheran Cchurch since childlhood and retained his faith all thru life. He was bedfast for less than a week. He often expressed the hope that the end would come soon so that he might not be a care or a burden to his loved ones. His wish came early in the morning January 29, 1930, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Taylor, loved and honored by all who knew him best. The funeral service was held in the Christ Lutheran Church in charge of Dr. C.N. Swihart on Friday, January 31, at 3:30 and interment was in the Greenwood Cemetery. The pall bearers were Theodore Fischer, Fayette Adams, Joe Brown, friends of the family, and three grandsons, Harry Edmund, Albert Caeser and John James Jackson. Children present from a distance were Emil Lehmann and wife 1st Etta Turey, 2nd Gladys Hale and two children, and Wm Otto Lehmann and wife Enid Logan, all of Garden City, and Katie Henderson of Wichita.
