Schmitt was born at Warsaw, Ill., August 28, 1863, and died of heart trouble at his home in Ulysses, Nebr., November 10, 1914, aged fifty years, three months and eighteen days. When the deceased was nine years of age his father passed away. He attended the village school a few years, after which he learned the harness making trade. In 1883 he came to Seward, Neb., where he worked at his trade for several years. In 1890 he removed to Ulysses and operated a harness business and with Mr. James M Stephens organized the Stephens-Schmitt Mercantile Co. of Ulysses. Mr. Schmitt was married in 1891 to Miss Mary Morrison of Seward, Nebr., who, together with two sons, Charles and Edward of Ulysses, are left to mourn his departure; he also leaves his mother, his brother Charles and two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Walgren and Mrs. Joseph Danker of Warsaw, Ill. Deceased had been one of the prominent business men of Ulysses during a period of twenty-four years, and was recognized as a man of integrity and sterling worth. In the affairs of life whether religiousk commercial or social he practiced an honest and upright method of dealing which won for him the respect and esteem which he so richly deserved. In his passing the community deplores the loss of a splendid citizen who at all times tried to be unswerving in the right and loyal to all which was good and true; he was domestic in his tastes; his home and family he prized above all else earthly. His was a sensitive, though forgiving nature, bearing ill will and malice toward none and thus while in the prime of life he came to the "parting of the ways." Mr. Schmitt served as trustee and treasurer of the Church of the Immaculate Conception at Ulysses for more than twenty years or until failing health compelled him to abandon the work in which he was deeply interested; the unsullied pages of the books committed to his keeping are but another instance of his careful and conscientious methods in daily practice. Beautiful floral tributes were in evidence at his funeral services which were largely attended and which occurred last Friday morning November 13, 1914, at the Church of the Immaculate Conception at Ulysses, when a solemn requiem high mass celebrated by his pastor, the Rev. Father Loughran, assisted by Fathers Ball of David City, Turgeon of Burchard and Wagner of Valley. Forty Knights of Columbus from David City attended the funeral services in a body. The active pall bearers were: John Kelly, Hugh J. Kelly, P. W. Ward, P. Ward, James and Laurence Lambe. The honorary pall bearers were: James M. Stephens, Dr. C. B. Coleman, Geo. Dobson, E. B. Richardson, A. B. Andrew and Henry McCoy. Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery near town. "Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and may light perpetual shine upon him." E. B. Schmitt, and Whereas, The long and intimate relation held with him in the faithful discharge of his duties in this society makes it eminently befitting that we record our appreciation of him, therefore, Resolved, That the wisdom and ability which he has exercised in the aid of our organization by service, contributions and council will be held in grateful remembrance. Resolved, That the sudden removal of such a life fro among our midst leaves a vacancy and a shadow that will be deeply realized by all members and friends of this organization, and will prove a serious loss to the community and the public. Resolved, That with deep sympathy with the bereaved relatives of the deceased we express our hope that even so great a loss to us all may be overruled for good by Him who doeth all things well.
